Program

Your days begin with pranayama (breathing practices), meditation, yoga asana class and yummy nutritious superfood breakfast. You then get a break to relax, read, or go explore. We are happy to help with arranging activities such as stand up paddle, massage, market visit, volcano hike, and more.

It’s fun to just sit on your hammock or chat with new friends. It’s an easy walk to the lake or sits by the river. In the afternoons, you will deepen your meditation, explore a slow down yoga practice, learn more about your mind and behavioral patterns, release tensions and hidden emotions, and of course dance, and play!

You will soften into yin, and understand better how to make resolutions that actually work. Doron Yoga & Zen Center will guide you through meditations and intentions setting that will actually help you reach your goals.

Prepare to laugh, dance, practice some powerful yet loving yoga, focus your mind like a Jedi, and love yourself and others like never before. They offer a purifying ceremony and chanting in the sauna. Get ready to become pure!

Afternoon workshops sample
Afternoon sessions are an opportunity to dive deeper into the practice, gain more knowledge from expert leaders, and have time to ask specific questions.

Sessions include for example:

Yin yoga
Deepen your flexibility, release stored emotions, and fears, purify your mind. Kasia will lead you through yin sessions making sure you are entering New Year energized, yet with a peaceful mind, self-love and compassion.

Yoga and Zen philosophy
Dive deeper into the understanding of yoga and Buddhism; duality versus non-duality. Understand what are the mind afflictions that keep us from finding freedom. Doron makes it practical and inclusive so you deepen and explore further no matter how many years of practice you have.

Yoga lifestyle:
Q&A about the yoga lifestyle, morning routines, food options, sleep hygiene, and more. Recommended reading includes The Yoga Lifestyle, by Doron Hanoch, before the retreat. (Available on Amazon and other online stores)

Yoga, for all levels. All levels are welcome. This retreat is for everyone interested in a more holistic yoga lifestyle.

Excursions
ONLY DURING THIS NEW YEAR RETREAT, YOU WILL RECEIVE A BONUS: Explore Mayan culture boat tour.

Optional activities
Lake Atitlan offers a plethora of different activities, including but not limited to swimming, kayaking, and hiking. A day trip can be taken by boat or tuk-tuk to the nearby villages for sightseeing and shopping, which also has a dock where local lanchas (boat taxis) stop every 20 to 40 minutes to take you to explore other towns around the lake.

San Marcos is the closest town over and can be reached by boat, tuk-tuk or walking. There, you can relax in one of the many cafes and restaurants or partake in an array of healing offerings, including shamanism, Reiki, Maya Horoscope readings, and much more. Among others, San Pedro, a short ride to the other side of the lake, has more of a vibrant vibe and is a little less expensive. San Juan offers more hand made stores, beautiful murals, co-ops, and a small village feel.

During your free time, you can enjoy some of these activities

  • Walk/hike around Tzununa, up the mountains or to next-door villages
  • Sit by the river and meditate or read a book, or simply reset and relax
  • Swim in the lake or chill out on the dock with stunning views
  • Hike The San Pedro Volcano (with a guide)
  • Kayak in San Marcos or San Pedro
  • Waterfall hike (when available)
  • Get one of our SPA treatments
  • Venture by boat, tuk-tuk, or foot into one of the neighbouring towns for some shopping for traditional textiles, paintings and crafts, sightseeing, and a feel for some local Mayan villages

The rooms at the Doron Yoga & Zen Center (DYZC) are simple but beautiful. Rustic, yet charming, many rooms have either a jungle, garden, or lake view. All DYZC accommodations are new and are built for comfort and safety while being ecological. The showers have hot water, and we have western toilets (eco treatment).

The water source is from a spring supplied by the municipality and from river water that runs through the property. We have 3 private rooms with shared bathrooms. These rooms are unique and have their own painted wall murals, and other special art and decorations. There are 3 toilets, 2 showers and 2 sinks, separate from one another, so there is never a wait time.

There are two lovely and spacious dormitories, which sleep 5 to 6 people and share the bathroom area. They have nice mattresses with traditional Mayan coverings, nightstands, shelves and other storage places. They have a cosy, artsy feeling.

There are also three beautiful log cabin rooms. These rooms have en-suite bathrooms, a deck with hammocks and chairs, gardens and a beautiful lake view.

These rooms have skylights and peaceful, creative energy. Bathrooms have locally sourced slate for the showers, hand-carved mirrors, and bamboo and wood elements. They feature locally handcrafted furniture and orthopaedic beds.

There are 6 spacious private rooms in our newest building Ananda with private bathrooms, decks and hammocks with stunning views. These can be deluxe double or triple rooms.

Food

Three vegetarian meals are served each day. The daily offerings have an international inspiration, mixing traditional Guatemalan fare with Doron’s Mediterranean touch. Meals are made from fresh produce; to the greatest extent possible, food is organic and locally sourced, sometimes from its own garden. Gluten-free and vegan diets can be accommodated upon request.

Each meal is substantial, varied, and nourishing to energize you through your retreat journey.

The menu at the Doron Yoga & Zen Center is designed with the guidance of founder and director, Doron Hanoch, who is also a professionally trained chef and certified nutrition consultant.

Some examples of the offerings include raw, cooked, and fermented foods, healthy sauces and condiments, homemade jams and peanut butter, fresh homemade granola, baked sourdough bread, fresh tortillas, and pizza cooked in either the clay or wood-burning ovens.

Snacks are available throughout the day.

Try the chocolate chip banana muffins, vegan superfood-rich bliss balls (made with local Maya raw cacao), dragon fruit smoothies, vegan black bean brownies, or our homemade kombucha!

The goal is simple: Let mother nature’s cuisine shine with all the exciting tastes, shapes, vibrant colours, and pure flavours. The food Doron Yoga serves is prepared with love, passion, and attention to detail.

How to get there

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at La Aurora International Airport (GUA). From there, it's easiest to take a shuttle to the town of Panajachel, located on Lake Atitlan. They can arrange a private or shared shuttle for you. If you'd like to take a shared shuttle, please plan to arrive at the airport before noon, as the last shared shuttles leave the city at 2:00 p.m.

From Panajachel, you can take the boat (lancha) in the direction of San Marcos to Tzununa, the small village where we're located. It is the stop before San Marcos. The last boat from Panajachel is at 7:00 p.m. Though there are also private boats available after this time, they would recommend arriving in time for the public boats if possible.

In Tzununa, take a tuk-tuk from the dock to Doron Yoga. There will be tuk-tuk drivers waiting at the dock, and all tuk-tuk drivers in Tzununa know where they are located.
