Chakra crystals: A beginner’s guide to total balance

A young woman lies flat on her back with crystals placed on the various chakra points on her body during a crystal healing session.

Whether at work or home, the endless search for balance is well, just that, never-ending.

For some, the concept is as elusive as the Loch Ness monster while others have called off the search party and taken a more holistic route with the trending wellness practice known as crystal healing.

Although using crystals as a form of therapy has been around for centuries, we’ve only recently started to take notice of these little gems, and it’s a good thing we are.

Said to hold the power to channel positive energy in the body and promote physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, there’s more to crystals than meets the eye.

Join us as we unearth the healing properties of crystals and reveal why they’re one of the best ways to balance your chakras and unlock your inner power.

What is crystal healing?

From famed footballer’s wives to Buddhist priests, it seems like everyone is practising crystal healing.

But what is it exactly?

Put simply, crystal healing is a type of therapy that uses gemstones or crystals to extract negative energy and harmonise balance in the body.

A crystal’s unique molecular composition emits a vibrational frequency which is believed to act as a kind of power channeler, helping flow positive energy through the body’s various chakras and purge it of toxic thoughts and feelings.

You can meditate with healing crystals, loop them around your neck or even tuck them under your pillow to feel their powerful effects, which there are plenty of.

What are the benefits of using chakra crystals?

A young woman sits in a seated position with hands in the prayer pose and all 7 chakras in the body lit up with their associated colours.

So, we know healing crystals are the latest wellness trend to hit the holistic market but do they actually work, and if so, what are they actually good for?

While scientific research on the subject is limited, the molecular composition of healing stones is believed to act as an energy and mood stabiliser with the following key benefits.

Relieves stress and anxiety

Crystals are often used to release stress and ease symptoms of anxiety.

Although they should not be used to treat a serious mental health condition, many people incorporate crystals into their daily meditation practice as a way of feeling more grounded and present.

Like breathing techniques, this can help you focus, let go of negative energy and relax.

Boosts overall mood

Using crystals in your daily practice can also be a fantastic mood booster.

Intended to release blocked energy in your chakras, a session of crystal therapy is a great way to level out a mood imbalance.

As you focus on purging negative thoughts from your mind, you’ll notice a surge of positive thinking and even an improvement in your self-confidence.

Forges connection

As crystal therapy releases negative energy from the body, it makes space for the development of positive connections, whether with yourself or the world around you.

During meditation, healing stones can be used to support a greater sense of self-worth and aid spiritual growth.

Why use crystals to rebalance your chakras?

We have 7 major energy points in the body known as chakras that run from the base of the spine all the way to the crown at the top of the head.

Meaning “wheel” in Sanskrit, chakras are thought to be spinning disks that allow energy to flow through the body with ease, reaching key nerve bundles and vital organs.

With our minds and bodies constantly receiving information and energy, your chakras can become blocked. When this happens, the body will feel imbalanced which can hamper our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.

To rebalance your chakras, you need to create alignment in the body again. This can be done through regular yoga practice, meditation or crystal healing.

When placed on the various blockages in the body, the crystal’s vibrational frequency flushes out negative vibes and clogged up passageways.

This can help you better connect to your body and purge the system of past traumas and toxic energy.

The 7 chakras and their crystals

Each chakra in your body is responsible for a particular feeling or sensation, and when balanced, creates an uninterrupted flow of positive energy and emotions.

It’s therefore important to know where the various chakras are located, what role they play and which stone is best to bring harmony back to your body.

Root Chakra

A young woman sits in the cross-legged seated position with her root chakra represented by a bright red crystal/light.

Position:

The root chakra is the body’s foundational chakra located at the base of your spine.

Function:

This chakra grounds the physical body to the earth and is responsible for making us feel secure, safe and stable.

The root chakra is also linked to the colon, bladder and lower back.

Crystals:

The colours associated with the root chakra are red and black. So, when selecting chakra crystals to balance this energy point, garnet, smoky quartz and black tourmaline are best.

Sacral Chakra

A young woman sits in the cross-legged position with her sacral chakra balanced and beaming bright orange.

Position:

The sacral chakra is located at the centre of the body, just below the navel.

Function:

It’s said that the sacral chakra is associated with the sex organs and kidneys, and plays a key role in our pleasure, play and physical relationships with others.

When this chakra is open, you’ll be bursting with childlike vivacity, creative expression and intense feelings of joy.

Crystals:

This chakra exudes warm tones of orange and yellow. Sacral chakra crystals include carnelian, orange calcite and orange garnet.

Solar Plexus Chakra

A woman rests her body on her knees stimulating her solar plexus chakra which shines a bright yellow and is represented by a yellow light/crystal.

Position:

The solar plexus chakra is located in the centre of your diaphragm, just below the breast bone.

Function:

This chakra represents your connection with your inner strength and sense of self-control and confidence.

When we talk about knowing something in our ‘gut’, it is this whimsical chakra coming into play.

It is strongly linked to our personal power and our ability to maintain control over our lives and decisions.

Crystals:

The solar plexus is a bright, warm yellow, with citrine, yellow jasper and golden tiger’s eye chakra crystals harmonising energy flow here.

Heart Chakra

The heart chakra shines bright green in a young man’s chest as he balances his chakras with healing crystals.

Position:

As its name suggests, the heart chakra is situated where your physical heart beats and is at the centre of your chakras.

Function:

Just like your heart, this chakra is responsible for our feelings of love, connection and compassion.

A balanced heart chakra allows us to love and live freely without experiencing negative emotions like jealousy, fear or distrust.

It’s also connected to our physical heart and is believed to soothe symptoms linked to respiratory problems, shoulder discomfort and upper back pain.

Crystals:

Associated with shades of green and pink, chakra crystals like rose quartz, green fluorite and malachite are used to promote feelings of unconditional love, inner peace as well as healthy circulation in the body.

Throat Chakra

A young woman lifts her chin to the sky, opening up her throat chakra which shines a dark blue colour.

Position:

Sitting at the base of your throat, just above the collar bone, the throat chakra is where our true voice lies.

Function:

The throat chakra is directly linked to our ability to communicate authentically and honestly. When aligned, you’ll be able to express yourself freely and speak your truth without fear.

This chakra is also said to be connected to physical issues stemming from the throat, larynx, thyroid and sinus.

Crystals:

Light blue chakra crystals or stones such as blue lace agate, aquamarine and blue kyanite are recommended for this chakra.

Third Eye Chakra

A young woman places her fingers in the middle of her forehead on her third eye chakra which is represented by a light blue/violet crystal/light.

Position:

Our sixth energy point is the third eye chakra which sits in the middle of your forehead, just about the eyebrows.

Function:

This chakra is a powerful source of wisdom and intuition and acts as a bridge between the heart and the head.

When wide open, the third eye chakra can provide clarity, self-awareness and a new perception on life.

It’s also responsible for a sound mind, as well as the health of our eyes, ears, spinal cord and brain

Crystals:

The third eye chakra is represented by dark purple and blue, which can be found in the blue tiger’s eye, amethyst and purple fluorite.

Lapis lazuli is also a great stone to promote wisdom and psychic abilities.

Crown Chakra

A young woman brings her palms together overhead to open her crown chakra which is represented by a bright purple light/crystal.

Position:

The final and highest chakra in the body is the crown chakra, located at the top of your head.

Function:

This chakra is where we unearth enlightenment and tap into our divine connection to the universe and the natural world.

With an open crown chakra, you’ll be able to see your true purpose, experience spiritual growth and receive messages from the universe.

Crystals:

Clear quartz, amethyst and selenite are common crown chakra crystals that can be used to open and balance this area.

5 simple steps to crystal healing

If it’s your first time using healing crystals you’re probably wondering where to start.

While it’s best to consult a crystal healer on a wellness retreat, you can also practise crystal healing at home to balance your 7 chakras.

Follow these 5 simple steps for a soothing crystal healing session at home.

1. Cleanse your crystals

Before you begin, it’s important to clean your crystals under cool running water.

This will remove any contaminants or negative energy that the stones might have absorbed, maximising their healing power.

It’s also a therapeutic practice, giving you time to set intentions and connect to your crystals.

2. Find a quiet space

Choose a peaceful spot in your home and prepare for the healing process.

On a yoga mat, lie flat down on your back in the corpse position.

Let your hands rest beside you and feel your body begin to ground into the earth.

3. Breathe and be

Become aware of your breath and the sensations in your body.

Close your eyes and focus on your surroundings, allowing time to slow down as you arrive in the present moment.

4. Position your crystals

Gently place each crystal on the relevant chakras, starting from your root chakra and making your way up the crown of your head.

5. Let them work their magic

With each of the crystals secured on their respective chakras, let your body fall into a meditative state and allow the stones to work their magic.

After several minutes, open your eyes and slowly remove each crystal.

Rise, take a drink of water and spend some time analysing your body and the changes you feel.

You can balance your chakras at home, or if you’re interested in taking your healing a step further, join a wellness retreat.
