How to unblock chakras at home in 7 simple steps

A young woman sits in the lotus pose on a yoga mat while trying to unblock chakras at home.

Do you ever think about what goes on inside your body?

What is it that makes us beam from ear to ear with childlike joy on an ordinary Tuesday, or suddenly sink into misery with no forewarning?

Amongst the muscle fascia, bones and pulsating vital organs, there are 7 peculiar swirls of energy known as chakras that play a vital role in our physical and mental wellbeing.

When these energy centres are blocked or out of balance, it can throw your entire being off and make you feel just plain strange.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned spiritual healer or don’t know your root chakra from your sacral, everyone has the power to channel more creativity, confidence and joy into their lives by tapping into the chakra system.

Roll up your sleeves, dust off your yoga mat, and join us as we flow through 7 simple yoga poses to unblock chakras at home.

Common signs of blocked chakras

There are seven main chakras in the body: the root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, and lastly the crown chakra.

These core energy points dot the centre of our body, starting from the base of our spine and moving all the way up to the crown of the head.

Although chakras cannot be seen with the human eye, they act as a spiritual connection to various parts of our body.

If even just one of your chakras is blocked, it can disrupt the energy flow within, draining energy in one part of your body and forcing another to work in overdrive.

This can impact your mental and physical well-being in a number of ways. Here are a few signs to look out for in each of your 7 chakras.

The Root Chakra

If you experience a depletion of energy in your root chakra, you can feel anxious, stressed, self-conscious or perhaps just lost in life.

On the other hand, if you have an overactive root chakra, you might experience intense feelings of greed and fear as your spirit tries to find grounding in life again.

The Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra is a sexual energy center and is responsible for our pleasure, play and physical relationships.

If this chakra is blocked, you might struggle to control your emotions or feel nothing at all. It can also cause a creative block and plummet your sex drive.

The Solar Plexus Chakra

This chakra is strongly linked to our inner strength, self-control and confidence. A blocked solar plexus chakra can cause you to feel weak, anxious and insecure.

You might also struggle to control your temper or experience digestive issues.

The Heart Chakra

A blocked heart chakra is like being hit by a really bad heartbreak.

When this chakra is balanced, you feel alive and love freely, without jealousy, fear or distrust. And when it’s not, the exact opposite happens.

The Throat Chakra

This energy point is where your true voice lies.

An overactive throat chakra can cause intense feelings of fear and judgement, and on the other hand, you might have difficulty expressing yourself with a blocked throat chakra.

You also might experience discomfort in your physical body such as a sore throat, thyroid problems or tension headaches.

The Third Eye Chakra

The third eye chakra is a key provider of clarity, self-awareness and inner wisdom.

When there is a blockage at this level, you can experience lapses in judgement or have difficulty making decisions. Following your intuition can also feel like tracking down a dim candle in an overcrowded city at night.

The Crown Chakra

As the highest chakra in the body, the crown chakra leads us to enlightenment and core universal energy.

It’s common to feel isolated, emotionally distressed and out of touch with the world around you when this chakra is out of sync. This may affect your ability to set intentions or your overall direction in life.

How can you unblock chakras?

Everyone’s energy makeup is different, and so there is no one method for balancing your chakras.

If you’ve ever been on a wellness retreat, you would’ve come across a variety of practices that promote energy flow and align each of the seven chakras. These include:

  • Yoga poses
  • Yogic breathing exercises or pranayama
  • Crystal healing
  • Mudras and mantras
  • Meditation

There is a wide range of yoga poses that can help open and unblock chakras. You can perform these poses in a sequence every morning or incorporate them into your daily practice, it’s completely up to you.

Just remember that everyone is different, so listen to your body and do what works best for you.

7 Simple poses to open and unblock chakras

1. Tree Pose (Vrksasana): Root chakra

A young woman stands in the tree pose on a yoga mat while trying to unlock her root chakra.

Standing on your yoga mat in mountain pose, sway from side to side and massage your feet into the floor.

Once grounded, take a deep breath in and bend your leg inward to rest in the middle of your thigh.

Find your balance and raise your hands overhead, allowing them to gently fall to your heart in prayer position.

Hold for a few seconds, remembering to breathe.

2. Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana): Sacral Chakra

A young woman practises the pigeon pose on a yoga mat at home to open up and unblock chakras.

Facing your yoga mat, fold forward into the downward dog position.

When you’re ready, bring your right leg forward and square it on the yoga mat with your ankle in line with your arms.

Settle into this pose, making sure that your left leg is fully extended behind you.

You can peel forward to stretch deeper into the pose, or lengthen your back and feel your hips open.

Take a few deep breaths before repeating on the other side.

3. Boat Pose (Navasana): Solar Plexus Chakra

A young woman points her toes to the sky in boat pose to awaken her solar plexus chakra.

Sit on your yoga mat with your legs straight out in front of you and hands firmly planted on the ground.

Bend your knees and lean back slightly, engaging your core muscles.

With your arms straight out in front, lift your legs so that they are at a 45-degree angle, in line with your arms.

You can either hold here or straighten your legs, pointing your toes upward.

Lengthen your spine with each breath and feel your solar plexus chakra gradually begin to open.

4. Camel Pose (Ustrasana): Heart Chakra

A woman leans back on her yoga mat in the camel pose to balance and unblock chakras at home.

On your yoga mat, bring one knee to the floor and then the other, making sure they’re hip-width apart.

Inhale, expanding your chest and bringing your hands together in front of your heart chakra in prayer position.

On exhale, draw your arms back and gently tilt your head to the ceiling.

Grab onto the back of your ankles and feel your chest, neck and throat open up.

Breathe here for a few seconds, pumping energy through to your heart chakra.

5. Fish Pose (Matsyasana): Throat Chakra

A young woman lies on her back with her hands under her buttocks in the fish pose.

Lying flat on your back, take a deep breath in and raise your upper body.

As you inch your pelvis off the mat, bring your elbows and forearms to rest under your buttocks, squeezing the scapulars together.

Tilt your head back, allowing your throat and chest to fully open up.

Keep your arms close to your torso and let the earth support the crown of your head, remembering to breathe throughout.

6. Plow Pose (Halasana): Third Eye Chakra

A young woman folds her legs overhead on a yoga mat while performing the plow pose.

Lie flat on your yoga mat with your naval grounded to the floor.

Bend your knees and extend them up towards the ceiling.

Then, using your arms to support your lower back, lift your hips off the ground so that they are in line with your shoulders.

Slowly fold your legs overhead until your toes touch the floor.

You can either release your hands and plant your palms on the mat, or if you need support, keep them where they are and breathe for a couple of seconds.

With your third eye chakra activated, you can lower your body back to the mat, one vertebra at a time.

7. Corpse Pose (Savasana): Crown Chakra

A young woman lies flat on her back on a yoga mat in savasana to unlock her crown chakra.

Lie flat on your mat and let your arms rest beside you with palms pointed to the sky.

Maybe close your eyes and feel the earth support your body weight.

Inhale, expanding your chest to the sky.

Exhale slowly, allowing your breath to travel through your body all the way to your crown chakra.

Stay here for a few more breaths.

Incorporating these yoga poses in your daily practice will redirect energy to where it’s needed most in the body, helping you unblock chakras and balance your wellbeing.
