What are mudras?

Meaning “gesture” in Sanskrit, a mudra is a symbolic hand gesture that is often practised in Hinduism and Buddhism.

There are hundreds of mudras for chakra awakening, each with a specific purpose and pose, but most are performed with the hands and fingers.

Mudras are also used in conjunction with pranayama (breathing techniques) and mantras to stimulate energy and connection in the body during meditation, yoga or other spiritual practices.

1. The Muladhara Mudra: Root Chakra

The root chakra is located at the base of your spine and is your foundational energy centre. 

Associated with the earth element, it keeps you tethered to the universe and promotes feelings of safety, security and stability.

The Muladhara mudra is linked to the root chakra and is said to bring grounding to this energy centre.

How to practise:

Bring your hands together in the prayer pose in front of your heart. 

Slowly lower your ring fingers and pinky fingers until they interlace.

Then, keeping your middle fingers straight, lower your index fingers and thumbs over one another so that they hook into each other.

2. The Shakti Mudra: Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra sits at the centre of the body, just below the navel.  

The sacral chakra is associated with the sex organs and kidneys, and is said to impact our pleasure, play and physical relationships.

The Shakti mudra is used to calm the body and mind during practice and unleash our sexuality and sensuality.

How to practise:

Place your palms together in front of your chest.

Keep your pinky and ring fingers extended and tuck your thumbs into your palms.

Then, bring the knuckles of your middle and index fingers together so that they fold over your thumbs.

3. The Rudra Mudra: Solar Plexus Chakra

How to practise:

Rest your hands on your thighs with your palms facing up.

Curl your thumbs, index fingers and ring fingers inwards, until they meet together in the centre of your palms.

Make sure that your pinky and middle fingers are straight and extended.

4. The Padma Mudra: Heart Chakra

The heart chakra lies in the middle of your chest, where your physical heart beats. 

A balanced heart chakra allows us to love and live freely, without jealousy, fear or distrust.

How to practise:

Bring your pink fingers and thumbs to touch in the centre of your chest.

Push the base of your palms together and slowly fan out your remaining fingers, like a flower in full bloom.

5. The Akash Mudra: Throat Chakra

How to practise:

Rest your hands on your thighs with your palms pointing towards the sky.

Take a deep breath in, and as you release, fold your middle finger and thumb in until they touch in the centre of your palm.

6. The Gyan Mudra: Third-Eye Chakra

Place your hands on your knees with your palms facing upwards.

How to practise:

With your sit bones grounded, sit up tall and spread your fingers out in front of you.

Bring your index fingers and thumbs together, forming a pyramid shape.

Stretch your remaining fingers straight out and slowly raise the mudra overhead.

Breathe and hold the mudra a few inches above your crown chakra.
